Rebuilding Anki with Codex and Agents

intellectronica · x · 2026-07-19

The author shares their transition from Anki to a customized spaced repetition app called SmashCards. Using Codex on an iPad, they rapidly generated the new app, while delegating web server deployment and management to a Hermes agent. The first version went live in the time it took to watch a single TV episode. They then instructed Codex to migrate approximately 23,000 cards, allowing them to resume their review sessions the very next morning. The author concludes that these highly personalized, self-built tools can be continuously iterated by agents into versions that perfectly align with individual preferences.
