The article illustrates this with examples: early DALL·E was restricted by safety policies and waitlists, but the release of Stable Diffusion as a downloadable, locally runnable open-source model capable of generating faces forced OpenAI to launch the more open DALL·E 2. A similar trend occurred with reasoning models: OpenAI's o1 initially held a clear advantage, but once DeepSeek introduced an open-weights reasoning model, other labs quickly followed suit with more reasoning models.
The author concludes that new open-weights models will continue to apply competitive pressure, forcing closed-source players to accelerate their iteration cycles.
