Gender and Nationality Bias Found in Science Peer Review

A study analyzed the review records of 110,000 papers submitted to Science and Science Advances over the past 5 years.
Results indicate:
- In Science, papers with a male corresponding author received a slight but significant advantage;
- Chinese researchers also experienced a notable disadvantage;
- These disparities were more pronounced during the editorial evaluation stage than during peer review.
The author notes that the mechanisms driving these biases remain unclear and could be further verified through experiments like randomized author anonymization.
