Gap of Chinese Open-Source Models Narrows to 2-3 Months

Ion Stoica notes that while open-source models, particularly Chinese ones, were previously said to lag 6 to 9 months behind frontier models, he now believes this gap has shrunk to just 2 to 3 months.
This reflects his assessment of the evolving model landscape: Chinese open-source models are catching up significantly faster, closing the generational gap with frontier models.
