He did the math: if the US chooses a closed-source path, local enterprises would pay $26-56 per million tokens for equivalent intelligence, whereas global competitors using open-source models would only pay $0.5-1.
He pointed out that such a massive cost disadvantage is economically unsustainable. If AI truly becomes the core driver of all future economic activity, a closed-source strategy is tantamount to tying America's hands behind its back. Furthermore, this isn't just about economics; at the military and national security level, defending against cheap attacks from adversaries at dozens of times the cost is equally fatal.
