Addressing the claim that open-weight models are "decels" (slowing down progress), Nathan Lambert discussed the underlying logic: open-source models drive down token prices → lower profit margins → reduce investments from major labs → slow down research progress.
He personally believes these concerns are minimal, as the US seems poised to maintain its investment lead. Combined with US leadership, open-source models can actually buy more time to understand AI, making it a win-win for all perspectives. He emphasizes that less funding means a longer timeline to AGI.
