AI Distillation Equates to Learning Human Knowledge and Should Not Be Restricted

In response to the view that "model distillation might be illegal," the author counters that distillation is like acquiring knowledge from top university professors. All knowledge (including AI-generated content) should belong to all of humanity, and attempting to restrict it actually hinders human progress.

The quoted tweet argues that there is no legally defensible reason to prove distillation is illegal; at worst, it violates terms of service, but suing customers is never a wise move. Furthermore, claiming model outputs are copyright-protected is an extremely dangerous stance for AI companies already operating in copyright gray areas.
