Will Open-Source AI Destroy Big Tech and Trigger a US Gov Takeover?

Dean Ball recently sparked controversy by labeling open-source AI as "decelerationism." The author interprets this to mean that if open-source models become sufficiently powerful and widespread, they will eventually destroy the business models of major AI labs, leading to a loss of R&D funding. Referencing Ilya Sutskever's testimony, without massive funding, there is no compute, and thus no way to train large models. The author speculates that in this scenario, the US government might intervene under the guise of national security, nationalizing and integrating top labs, directly funding them through the Department of Defense (the 2027 defense budget proposal reaches $1.5 trillion). The author concludes that despite these risks, we should not abandon open source, but rather find a middle path caught in the crossfire between open and closed source.
