Why India Struggles to Build Frontier AI Models

The author argues that the fundamental barrier for Indian companies developing frontier models is economics, not talent.
Key obstacles include: local companies attempting to build frontier models must immediately compete with free tiers from Anthropic and OpenAI, alongside open-weight models from China. In contrast, Chinese models grew largely by capitalizing on a domestic market gap—since OpenAI/Anthropic are unavailable there, local models gained vital breathing room.
The author further points out that if India maintains a highly globalized, wide-open market, local founders are forced to compete in a space already dominated by international giants. To truly participate in the AI race, India needs to artificially create a large enough protected market for domestic AI; otherwise, investing in local frontier models simply isn't economically viable.
