The author noted that while cloud inference seemed like the obvious choice, their mindset completely shifted on day 2 of the ACT-2 evaluations.
In real home environments, the model began revealing issues caused by network instability, leading to the following conclusions:
- For a robot to function reliably in a real home, edge inference is not optional
- Network jitter only becomes the primary failure mode when the robot is highly autonomous and tested in unseen, real-world homes
- Such issues are incredibly difficult to expose in a lab setting beforehand
They also mentioned that if @ArpitKalla hadn't spent two days pushing low-latency edge inference code directly into production, the product launch timeline would have been severely delayed.
