Does Technological Prosperity Kill Innovation?

The author argues that genuine technological breakthroughs often stem from high-risk, unconventional, and hard-to-categorize exploration. Once a technology enters a boom phase, the market pushes it from "exploration" into an execution stage focused on reproducibility, comprehensibility, and scalability. Drawing on human cognitive preferences, the author points out that as technology and AI accelerate change, society leans heavily on conformity, tribalism, and existing categories for a sense of security. Consequently, the very mindset that originally birthed the innovation becomes less common after success. The conclusion is that organizations aiming for sustained innovation must deliberately protect their ability to "look for answers in unfamiliar places," avoiding over-reliance on early or rigid planning and categorization. The further out you look, the fewer existing categories there are to limit imagination, increasing the likelihood of discovering new opportunities.
