The author argues that the new ChatGPT Desktop and Codex experiences have led him to treat Codex as a "visual control plane for a multi-model team." He currently uses ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max simultaneously, designing his workflow as follows: a lead coordinator handles requirements and final validation; a single implementation agent owns each coding facet; other agents parallelize investigation, testing, and review; and external models are granted only explicit, limited permissions.
He hopes OpenAI will further enhance these capabilities: integrating external agents via MCP or other open protocols, visualizing agent roles and dependencies as a graph, applying granular permissions for file systems/terminals/browsers, clarifying worktree and diff ownership with conflict detection, retaining evidence timelines (like tests and screenshots), displaying usage/cost/context per agent, and seamlessly syncing tasks across Desktop, VS Code, and CLI.
The core takeaway: the winning development environment of the future won't necessarily have the single strongest model, but will enable the best available models to collaborate while maintaining clear accountability and auditability.
