Anthropic: AI Involved in 60% of Engineering Tasks

Anthropic's internal research reveals that engineers use AI in about 60% of their work, but tasks that can be "entirely handed over to AI without review" account for less than 20%. The author argues that this 40-percentage-point gap perfectly illustrates AI's current positioning: it's a collaborator, not a replacement.
The report also highlights a key finding: roughly 27% of AI-assisted tasks wouldn't have been done at all without AI. These aren't just "old tasks done faster," but new tasks previously shelved due to high costs or low priority—like patching minor issues, building internal tools, or running experiments that were previously too labor-intensive.
The author concludes that AI is redefining "what work is worth doing," rather than merely accelerating existing processes.
