Why Vendors Don't Open-Source Outdated Model Weights
teortaxesTex · x · 2026-07-17
This post discusses "whether outdated models should have their weights open-sourced." The author gives two reasons:
- Open-sourcing exposes algorithmic secrets.
- If the weights are released and the so-called "frontier capabilities" turn out to hold no real secrets, it damages the product narrative.
The thread also extends to whether Grok or Anthropic might open weights to compete for Chinese model users, focusing on why model vendors are reluctant to release old model weights.
