An indie developer shares their experience building a VS Code extension entirely via AI coding assistants—writing zero lines of code themselves while providing only intent and reviews.
- Background: Two months ago, noticing the Grok coding agent was terminal-only, the developer decided to build a GUI for it.
- Process: Investing about 100 hours, they generated 22,000 lines of code and 980 unit tests. Despite Grok lagging in benchmarks at the time, the developer bet on its future improvement.
- Results: The extension reached 25,000 installs. With the release of Grok 4.5 catching up to frontier models, the plugin was perfectly positioned in advance.
The author advises finding a familiar problem and using AI to rapidly build a solution. In the AI era, shipping a v0 directly beats over-validating theories; even if you fail, you learn more than from a paid course.
