Codex Desktop Skinning Tool Goes Viral

aigclink · x · 2026-07-17

A developer created a "skinning" tool for the Codex desktop app, racking up 7000+ stars in just 2 days. It works without modifying the official installer or touching code signing, instead altering the appearance via local CDP injection to avoid modifying official binaries in .app, app.asar, or WindowsApps.

The README includes a stark warning: once the CDP debugging port is enabled, any local program could theoretically connect and take over the window. Users are advised not to run untrusted local programs while the theme is active.
