Databricks co-founder Ion Stoica shared his experience turning research into billion-dollar companies. Having co-founded Databricks (valued at over $100 billion), Anyscale, and Arena AI, his Berkeley lab also incubated popular open-source projects like Ray, vLLM, and SGLang. He pointed out that the key signal for a research project's commercial viability is when users start asking, "Who will maintain this project after the students graduate?"
