Anthropic's pricing history chart reveals:
- The price for Claude's flagship model was around $11.02 per million tokens in 2023 and is about $10 today. It experienced fluctuations like $8 → $15 → $5, showing an up-and-down trend rather than a continuous drop.
- Sonnet has remained at $3/million tokens since March 2024 across six versions without a price hike. The author argues that "AI getting cheaper" is most evident here, as capabilities improved while the price stayed flat.
- Haiku went from an initial $0.25 to $1.00 today, roughly a 4x increase.
- Additionally, if evaluating the cost at a "fixed capability level," prices drop by about 10–50x annually. However, this chart tracks the list prices of different tiers, not the cost curve of the exact same capability.
- Early Claude was once billed by the character: in March 2023, it was $2.90 per million characters, switching to token-based billing a month later.
