Open-Source AI Will Need Its Own Compute Stack

Drawing an analogy to the RSA encryption export controls of the 1990s, the author argues that technologies once deemed "dangerous" or "sensitive" are often later proven to be subjects of overreaction. Based on this, he contends that current concerns surrounding closed-source AI will eventually be proven equally insignificant.
His core conclusion is that open-source AI better aligns with US interests. As an "open and sufficient" AI ecosystem takes shape, open-source models will inevitably require their own dedicated inference capabilities and compute infrastructure.
