Consumer GPUs Repurposed into Server Cards

Shared reports indicate that Chinese factories are bulk-buying RTX 5090s, stripping the chips and VRAM, and reassembling them into 128GB server cards priced around $4,000 each.
The logic is that due to export controls, Chinese labs struggle to purchase specialized AI chips, making consumer gaming GPUs a viable alternative. Factories weld the GPUs and VRAM onto custom server boards, add rack-friendly air cooling, and have even set up automated soldering and robotic arm assembly lines. This practice started with the 5090 and has now spread to the 5080, 5070 Ti, and 5060 Ti.
The author notes two consequences:
- Gamers will be priced out of the market, affecting GPU pricing and availability.
- While NVIDIA still sells the hardware, they lose control over its actual post-sale use cases.
