AWS Launches Managed Knowledge Base Service

AWS announced on its official blog that Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Base is now generally available, featuring managed retrieval capabilities designed to "build enterprise search for agents and generative AI applications." It abstracts the connectors, parsing, vector databases/graph databases, retrieval logic, access controls, and monitoring—previously stitched together by teams—into a single managed service, aiming to reduce setup time from days or weeks down to minutes.
The article highlights three key capabilities:
- Simplified Configuration: Quickly create knowledge bases via the console or API, supporting direct integration with enterprise data sources.
- Smarter Retrieval: Supports high-quality retrieval, configurable chunking strategies, embeddings, and rerankers.
- Production Readiness: Built-in ACL checks, encryption, observability, and auto-scaling, making it suitable for enterprise scenarios.
Supported data sources include S3, SharePoint, Confluence, Google Drive, OneDrive, and Web Crawler. The post also demonstrates a 3-step API example for creating a knowledge base, adding data sources, and starting ingestion, noting support for multimodal document parsing (PDF, PPTX, DOCX, audio, video, etc.) and hybrid retrieval.
