Codex Hands-on: Capable But Too Slow

Daniel_Farinax · x · 2026-07-16

After testing Codex for a few hours last night, the author noted it performs well in web design. However, while it gets systems, backend, and feature building done, its speed is noticeably slow.

For example, modifying an existing feature takes Codex about 7 minutes, compared to roughly 1 minute for Grok 4.5. The author feels spoiled by Grok's speed, noting that using Claude and Codex now feels like an older workflow—submitting a request, walking away, and returning later—which severely disrupts development momentum.
