EU Forces Google to Open Android and Search

The Verge AI · rss · 2026-07-16

The EU is requiring Google to open key parts of Android and Search to competitors to comply with digital antitrust rules.

These two rulings could weaken Google's control over the two major platforms and create more competitive space for other AI assistants and search engines. Google must begin sharing search data by January 2027 and complete Android-related changes by July 2027. The report also notes that this will impact the future competitive landscape for Google's AI tool, Gemini.
