The researchers point out that while effective cities are key to prosperity in low- and middle-income countries, related economic and social research has long suffered from a distinct rural bias, primarily due to the lack of high-quality urban boundary data.
The team noted their inability to find boundary data applicable to over 10,000 global cities, prompting them to develop their own and release it for research purposes. The authors also mentioned that this is just an intermediate step in a larger data pipeline, with further details and global city data updates to follow.
