Resume Screening Agent Accidentally Rejects All Candidates

A startup used an AI agent for initial resume screening, automatically accepting or rejecting applications based on the JD. After a few months, the hiring team accidentally discovered that applicants from a specific bootcamp were systematically rejected—23 people over 3 consecutive weeks.
Upon reviewing the logs, the author suspected the cause: a standardized project title format from the bootcamp triggered a "soft negative signal" originally intended for another purpose, causing the model to flag them as mismatches. The team subsequently made two adjustments:
- The agent no longer issues automatic rejections; it now only provides recommendations requiring human confirmation.
- Quality checks shifted from occasional spot-checks to continuous weekly sampling, acknowledging that a clean bill of health one week doesn't guarantee the next.
The author's final concern is that similar false positives might still be happening under the radar in other patterns.
