Responding to previous skepticism, the author clarifies that they do believe self-replicating factories are possible, but this progress will generally occur in two phases:
- A trajectory of robotic improvement similar to Waymo will emerge first: Capabilities will incrementally approach a sufficiently reliable level, meaning the "first mostly automated factory construction" will happen before "fully automated construction."
- Building an entire industrial supply chain at once is unrealistic: This requires massive new R&D and will face numerous bottlenecks. "Self-replication" cannot be interpreted as an overnight success.
Overall, the perspective is that self-replicating factories are not a fantasy, but their development will be incremental and phased rather than sudden.
