The author points out that in the 2033 scenario outlined in AI 2040, the proliferation of AI labor leads to 50% unemployment, yet a $190,000 US median income and Universal Basic Income (UBI) are sustained by taxing AI.

The author argues that if an AI workforce massive enough to support UBI for half the population truly exists, it could be mobilized for mechanistic interpretability (MI) research, generating 100,000x more research output than we currently see.
