Addy Osmani on Engineering Responsibility in the Agent Era

AI Engineer · youtube · 2026-07-15

In his closing keynote, Addy Osmani discussed the evolving role of software engineers in the era of AI agents: as coding tasks become increasingly automated, an engineer's core value is no longer just writing code, but taking responsibility for system outcomes.

He emphasized that engineers must embrace "answerability," which includes system ownership, reviewing AI-generated code, avoiding cognitive debt, managing orchestration tax, and adopting "if you can't explain it, don't ship it" as an operational principle.

He also noted that future competitiveness will stem from human judgment, taste, and high agency, rather than pure output speed. AI could unlock latent demand, but only if the boundaries between humans and agents are clearly defined.
