Google Search Integrates Image Generation

rmstein · x · 2026-07-15

Google celebrated the 25th anniversary of Google Images, reflecting on the evolution from "searching for images" to "using images to search."

The focus of this update is to make search more multimodal: AI Mode can now answer queries by combining images, video, voice, and text, delivering richer visual results for scenarios like shopping, fashion, and art. Google is also rolling out a new desktop experience for Google Images, offering a more immersive, interest-based visual gallery.

Additionally, users can already generate images in AI Mode, and this capability will soon be available directly within AI Overviews powered by the latest Nano Banana model. These updates will launch in the US over the coming weeks.
