Google Zurich and Transformer Nostalgia

The author visited Google Zurich today and recalled that during their last visit in 2018, they happened to attend a public talk about a new thing called "Transformer."
This post captures a slice of AI history: back then, the Transformer was just a novel concept, whereas today it has become the foundational technology of the entire large language model era.
