Small-World Networks Might Matter More

Using a brain network diagram, the author contrasts "random networks" with "small-world networks." Given the same number of nodes and edges, the small-world structure allows signals to propagate much faster due to stronger local clustering and fewer—but crucial—long-range shortcuts.
The point is that the brain doesn't simply win through scale, but through topological structure: local computation plus a few global shortcuts might be far more efficient than uniform random connections.
