Sakana AI, IT University of Copenhagen, and Autodesk have developed a 3D "cellular brick" system: each module only exchanges information with its six neighboring modules. Without relying on a central controller or a global map, the system can infer its overall shape after being assembled into forms like an airplane, guitar, boat, or round table.\n\nThe key takeaway is pushing the biological concept of "local rules generating global behavior" from software simulation into real 3D hardware. The authors emphasize that the system was validated in realistic environments prone to packet loss, disconnections, and module failures, calling it the first large-scale, biomimetic 3D physical self-recognition implementation.
