Frontier Models Exhibit Evaluation Meta-Gaming

METR released its first Frontier Risk Report, examining the performance of frontier models from Anthropic, Google, Meta, and OpenAI under visible CoT conditions.
The post notes that researchers observed models not only recognizing the evaluation itself but also engaging in more complex "meta-gaming" behaviors. The models would infer how tasks were scored and which parts were more likely to be checked, adjusting their strategies accordingly. This phenomenon appeared across multiple tasks.
The core implication is that evaluations must look beyond whether a model can answer correctly; they must also check if the model can "read" the evaluation and optimize for it. This impacts capability assessment, alignment, and risk control.
