AI Agents Are Not a New Concept
The author points out that current vendor marketing narratives around Agentic AI are somewhat inaccurate; the technology is actually the culmination of 80 years of evolution in machine perception, thinking, and execution.
Development Timeline
- Foundation (1940s-1960s): Cybernetics and feedback loops were established, and Turing proposed the concept of machine thinking. In the late 1960s, SRI introduced Shakey, the first robot capable of perceiving its environment and reasoning autonomously.
- Expert Systems and the AI Winter (1970s-2000s): Rule-based knowledge agents like MYCIN emerged but triggered AI winters due to high maintenance costs and brittleness. Academia then defined agents as entities with autonomous adaptation capabilities, and voice assistants like Siri entered the mainstream.
- Rise of Modern Agents (2017-Present): The Transformer architecture unlocked general language reasoning capabilities. Post-2022, models advanced to call tools, browse the web, and execute actions, making closed-loop workflows a reality.
Current Status and Conclusion
By 2024-2025, major cloud providers launched enterprise-grade Agent platforms, the MCP protocol standardized tool integration, and application scenarios expanded comprehensively. The author believes the true breakthrough is that we finally possess the matching compute, models, and architecture to allow agents to deploy stably across various industries.
