Preserving Raw Academic Discussions in Scientific Records

The author introduces a new paper: critical discussions by knowledge workers before and after publication usually don't make it into the scientific record, leaving only the compressed and polished formal paper. While recordings can partially bridge this gap, the authors believe we can go further.
In this instance, Karina Kofman organized a discussion, and the journal Organisms bravely accepted the experiment by publishing a lightly edited conversation transcript as a discussion thread for a recent paper on the "definition of life." The author emphasizes that these discussions—originally buried in emails and unseen by the community—could eventually be used by students or even future AIs for learning and mining insights.
