Sakana AI highlighted a recently published paper in Nature Communications titled Smart Cellular Bricks, co-authored by Sebastian Risi from Sakana AI, alongside researchers from IT University of Copenhagen and Autodesk Research.

The paper showcases a biologically inspired modular robotic system composed of numerous physical cube units. Each module runs the same neural network on a local microcontroller without relying on a central processor or global coordinates. They collaborate through local interactions to infer the overall shape and autonomously repair themselves after damage. The authors emphasize this as a physical-world validation of “swarm intelligence/decentralized control,” extending their prior research on collective intelligence in software and simulations.
