Brown In-Person Exam Exposes AI Reliance

After noticing highly uniform assignment styles suspected to be heavily reliant on generative AI, Roberto Serrano, an economics professor at Brown University, moved the final exam to a strictly in-person format.

The results were stark: 18 students dropped the class immediately, the average final exam score plummeted from 96 to 48.6, and nearly 20 students failed. While a take-home midterm designed to reduce anxiety had inflated averages to abnormally high levels, the in-person exam laid bare the students' true dependence on AI.
