Anthropic on the Evolution of the Claude Agent Platform

Three Anthropic executives overseeing the Claude Platform discussed changes in agentic infrastructure over the past six months: the platform has evolved from being just a "model-calling API" to adding scaffolding across identity, permissions, memory, results, and sandbox simulations, making it easier for teams to integrate model capabilities into actual workflows. They believe agents will gradually gain more independent identities, understanding goals first before requesting the necessary permissions. Multiple agents will also communicate with each other via APIs / MCP. As model reasoning and tool-calling capabilities improve, the previously heavy process-control scaffolding is thinning out, giving rise to new "meta-scaffolding" like multi-agent competition, devil's advocates, and asking stronger partners for help. The interview also mentioned implementation cases: in manufacturing, agents simulate the experience of veteran workers to fill knowledge gaps from retirements; in software development, the scope expands from writing code to an end-to-end process covering requirements, environment setup, PRs, and QA. When measuring enterprise ROI, they recommend a gradual progression from individual efficiency to teams, and then cross-team processes. The biggest hurdles remain security compliance and evaluation. The future organizational form might resemble an "invisible OS," where users simply provide goals and budgets, and agents complete extensive work in the background.
