Similar Scenes Interfere with 3D Reconstruction

The author explains doppelgangers: scenes that look nearly identical but are not the same location, such as different building facades.
They point out that these "pseudo-similar scenes" interfere with 3D reconstruction, making them ideal for training:
- Image matching pipelines
- 3D reconstruction pipelines
- Other vision systems relying on scene recognition
A subsequent update highlights a key finding: hard doppelgangers don't necessarily have to be from the same building. The author found many image pairs in SF-XL separated by over 200 meters but visually highly similar. These can be continuously mined from open-source street view data like Mapillary and filtered for similarity using MegaLoc, allowing for near-infinite sample expansion.
