SWE 1.7 Nears Frontier Models in Devin

[Repost] A user notes that after extensively using SWE 1.7 in @DevinAI, it's becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish it from Opus 4.8 or gpt 5.5.

They still prefer Fable or gpt 5.6 for harder tasks, but note that a significant portion of engineering work can now be completed at a much lower cost—especially since SWE 1.7 is currently free.

They predict that over the next 6–12 months, most engineering will be done within non-frontier lab coding workbenches like Cursor, Devin, Amp, and Factory, using their self-trained or fine-tuned models. Meanwhile, the downward pressure on token prices driven by Meta and xAI will continue to benefit the entire industry.
