Apple's Failed Car Left an AI Chip Legacy

Apple's canceled autonomous car project unexpectedly laid the groundwork for the company's current edge AI advantage. According to Mark Gurman, Apple realized early in the project that robust on-device AI processing was necessary.
Although the car processor never saw the light of day, the R&D directly led to the creation of the Neural Engine. It debuted on the A11 Bionic chip in the iPhone X, initially powering computer vision tasks like FaceID and Animoji, and has now become a core pillar of Apple's on-device AI processing.
