Chinese AI Firms Raise Funds to Bet on Compute
zephyr_z9 · x · 2026-07-12
Reports indicate that two publicly listed Chinese AI labs and MiniMax have burned through 80%–90% of their raised funds for compute after their January 2026 IPOs.
With compute spending depleting their reserves early, they returned to the Hong Kong market this weekend to raise roughly $6 billion—about 5 times their IPO proceeds.
The post further points out:
- The bulk of the funds will flow to cloud providers, with Alibaba Cloud specifically named as potentially taking around 80%
- Cloud providers will then pass the money down the compute equipment supply chain
- Exactly which segments will benefit—Huawei, local GPU makers, Nvidia, CPUs, memory, etc.—is anyone's guess
