Visa on the Authorization Challenge of AI Shopping
brucemacv · x · 2026-07-12
Visa CEO Ryan McInerney believes that the key challenge in **having AI agents place orders and complete payments for users** isn't product recommendation, but **authorization and trust control**. He breaks the evolution down into three steps: 1. Users first leverage AI for product discovery, then redirect to external sites for checkout; 2. By 2026, more native purchases will occur directly within platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot; 3. Ultimately, users will authorize agents to "find and buy on my behalf." The real challenge is ensuring trust across three parties: - **Banks** must confirm the transaction is genuinely user-authorized; - **Users** need to restrict what and how much the agent can buy; - **Merchants** require proof that the agent is permitted to place the order.
