Visa CEO on the Three-Party Trust Challenge in AI Agent Payments

teortaxesTex · x · 2026-07-12

At the Davos Forum, Visa CEO Ryan McInerney discussed the evolution of autonomous payments by AI agents. He predicts that by 2026, users will be able to make purchases directly within native apps like ChatGPT and Gemini, which will eventually evolve into agents searching for and buying products on behalf of users. He pointed out that this model introduces a "three-party trust" challenge: banks must verify that transactions align with user intent, users need to set spending limits for agents, and merchants must validate the agents' authorization. This is far more complex than simply having AI recommend products.
