The author draws two analogies:
- Improving the economy shouldn't primarily focus on changing people's economic preferences, but rather on building structures that channel those preferences toward more efficient outcomes.
- Similarly, improving society shouldn't try to change people's values, but should promote ethics and norms that facilitate collaboration across value differences.
They further add that an ideal society, like an ideal economy, should guide highly motivated, trustworthy individuals into positions where they can make the greatest ethical contributions.
