Why Industrial Vision Still Relies on FPGA

Industrial color sorters are among the earliest commercial robot vision systems, and many still rely on line-scan CMOS/CCD sensors + FPGA.
The core reason is extreme low latency: material moves at 3–8 m/s, with only 5–20 ms from sensing to decision to action. FPGA provides deterministic real-time computing, though it doesn't 'understand' images. In contrast, mainstream GPU-based AI solutions still struggle to match this performance in low-latency industrial scenarios.
