Hwajung Hong's presentation at ICML 2026 highlighted that using generative AI in design workflows triggers a "cognitive bypass" in designers, meaning the brain passively accepts AI outputs and ceases active thinking.
To mitigate this, the presentation recommends introducing beneficial friction into the design process to help designers maintain autonomy and critical judgment.
