AI Biology Models Need Deeper Understanding of Cell Regulation

Stanford professor Anshul Kundaje urges researchers combining AI and biology to deeply study biological mechanisms like cell differentiation, development, and artificial reprogramming. He emphasizes the need to verify whether current AI models truly encode these complex biological rules. Furthermore, he points out that organisms trigger highly unusual regulatory mechanisms during perturbation experiments under non-physiological conditions. If models cannot implicitly learn underlying biophysical principles, they will struggle to extrapolate effectively for these extreme scenarios.
