Questioning the Doomsday Extrapolation of AI 2040
joshua_saxe · x · 2026-07-11
The author questions the pessimistic narrative of "AI 2040"-style predictions, arguing that the reasoning used to support a rapid march toward doomsday is inadequate.
He presents a few counterexamples:
- In reality, radiologists and programmers are still employed, and automated coffee machines haven't replaced baristas.
- If coding agents had already achieved significant autonomy at big tech companies, we should be seeing widespread small-scale scheming, reward hacking, or misalignment harm by now.
Therefore, he believes the authors haven't adequately explained these empirical facts. Their conclusions should be more cautious rather than pushing resources, initiatives, and governance based on an overly extreme conceptual model.
