3 Questions to Ask Before Replacing Employees with AI
DavidLinthicum · x · 2026-07-11
Observing that many companies blindly follow the trend of using AI for layoffs to cut costs—often resulting in chaos—the author proposes three questions leaders must answer before taking action:
- Is it well-considered? Don't just listen to vendor pitches. AI systems still require human oversight, continuous maintenance, and fine-tuning. Blind layoffs will only create expensive problems.
- What problem are we solving? You can't just focus on cost reduction; you must define clear business goals (e.g., improving customer satisfaction, speeding up time-to-market). Otherwise, it's merely downsizing, not transformation.
- Are we prepared for the human cost? Layoffs mean losing institutional knowledge, damaging customer relationships, and hurting team morale.
The author concludes that successful companies aren't rushing to replace employees with AI. Instead, they use AI to augment—rather than eliminate—human capabilities through upskilling and role redesign.
